PUBLIC WORKS AND GOVERNMENT SERVICES – CANADA

DESCRIPTION

Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC), recognized as a green leader, is the organization that drives the government of Canada. As the chief Government purchaser, they hold a leadership role in assuring green procurement and energy-efficient buildings. They continue to look for solutions that are cleaner, greener and more cost-effective. PWGSC strives to identify materials and products which improve energy efficiency and they recognize that thermal insulation plays a critical roll in overall sustainable solutions.

The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) is the Government of Canada’s premier research and technology organization (RTO) and operates multiple research facilities across the country. NRC Sussex Drive Molecular Sciences Research Facility project plans initially called for pre-insulated piping.

The project plans were for nearly 2,000 LF of trench with steel carrier pipes of: 12” steam, 4” condensate and 24” chilled water S/R. The new system will eventually tie into the future downtown Ottawa district energy heating and cooling loop. The contractor for the project had experience with Gilsulate 500XR® and proposed its use for the project based on short lead time and a demonstrated substantial cost savings vs. the pre-insulated piping system. PWGSC and NRC had no experience with Gilsulate 500XR® but they were willing to investigate the proposed sustainable alternate and consider a different method to how they have always done it. They conducted an extensive evaluation and review of the product, capabilities, history and references in order to move forward.

In working closely with the engineering firm and the project engineer from the contracting company, Gilsulate International, Inc. was able to demonstrate and prove that Gilsulate 500XR® would be significantly more efficient than the originally specified pre insulated piping system. NRC is adamant about sustainability and efficiency and the difference in higher efficiencies translates to a continual increased saving in energy over the life of the system. Gilsulate 500XR® was the only product that would not only meet but exceed the requirements set forth by them and has been recognized/accepted as a viable alternative to the pre-insulated piping system.

Gilsulate is always proud and excited to assist old and new clients; we take genuine pride in helping to solve our client’s challenges and assist them with their goals of sustaining a comfortable environment. NRC was extremely pleased with the initial and long-term savings plus the superior and unique performance capabilities that Gilsulate 500XR® offers.
